If your phone videos look shaky, a 3-axis phone gimbal is the cheapest upgrade that makes the biggest difference. The two names that come up in almost every "best beginner gimbal for phone" thread are the Insta360 Flow 2 Pro and the DJI Osmo Mobile 8. Both fold up small, both have a built-in tripod and selfie stick, both pan a full 360°, and both work with Apple DockKit, so an iPhone can track you in its own Camera app.

The real differences are how they track people, what's in the box, and what US buyers can actually get. Below we compare official specs, add hands-on findings, explain why the Osmo Mobile 8P isn't on our list, and add one camera gimbal for anyone stepping up from a phone.

The verdict in 30 seconds

  • Best beginner gimbal for phone overall (US): Insta360 Flow 2 Pro. It can keep a whole group in frame, it has the most creative modes for first-timers (Free Tilt, a teleprompter, a selfie mirror), and on amazon.com it's sold by Insta360's own store. • Best value, and best if you own DJI mics: DJI Osmo Mobile 8. The tracking module and fill light come in the box, and the module can receive audio straight from a DJI Mic transmitter. It's great for solo vlogs and kids or pets. 👉 DJI Osmo Mobile 8 on Amazon
  • Best for big phones and foldables: Hohem iSteady M7. It handles a 500 g payload, comes with a detachable touchscreen remote with live preview, and lasts up to 12 hours. It's heavier and costs more. 👉 Hohem iSteady M7 on Amazon
  • Shooting on a mirrorless camera instead? DJI RS 4 Mini Combo. It has a 2 kg payload, auto axis locks and a tracking module in the combo. 👉 DJI RS 4 Mini Combo on Amazon

Stabilization: honestly, a tie

All three are 3-axis gimbals, and for walking shots, travel clips and talking-head videos the difference in smoothness is small. Reviewers comparing the Flow 2 Pro and Osmo Mobile 8 directly call stabilization roughly equal and say to choose on tracking instead (AI Creator Picks, August 2026). Digital Camera World gave the Osmo Mobile 8 4.5 stars and found its module tracking excellent. So the real question is which one makes filming easier for the way you shoot.

Tracking: where they really differ

All three can follow you around the room, but they do it differently.

Insta360 Flow 2 Pro: best for groups

The Flow 2 Pro gives you three ways to track:

  • Apple DockKit works with no accessories in 200+ iOS apps, including the native Camera app. You need an iPhone 12 or later on iOS 17+ (not the iPhone SE 3rd gen or 16e), and it tracks people only.
  • The Insta360 app (Deep Track 4.0) tracks people, pets and objects, and adds multi-person tracking and Active Zoom Tracking, which keeps fast subjects locked even when you're zoomed in.
  • The AI Tracker is a small clip-on camera that adds tracking in any app on iPhone or Android. Insta360 says it isn't included with the standard Flow 2 Pro, so buy the AI Tracker Bundle if you want it.

The headline difference is groups. Testers found the Flow 2 Pro keeps a whole group framed, while the Osmo Mobile 8 spots several people and asks you to pick one. For couples, families or two-person interviews, that alone decides it.

DJI Osmo Mobile 8: best value, best for solo and pets

The Osmo Mobile 8 ships with DJI's Multifunctional Module in the box. It snaps on and tracks people, cats and dogs in your phone's native camera and in third-party apps, with no DJI app needed. It also has a fill light, and it can receive audio straight from a DJI Mic 3, Mic Mini or Mic 2 transmitter, so you get clean sound with no receiver on the phone. If you already have a DJI mic, that's a genuinely useful shortcut.

It also supports Apple DockKit (iPhone 12 or later on iOS 18.5+, per DJI) and tracking in the DJI Mimo app. Plan your battery: DJI rates about 10 hours idle, about 5 with module tracking, and about 4 with the light at full.

Hohem iSteady M7: best remote control

The M7's party trick is a detachable 1.4-inch touchscreen remote: set the gimbal down, walk up to 7 m away, and still see your shot and pick who to track. Its magnetic AI tracker works in your phone's native camera and doubles as an RGB/white fill light.

Size, weight and phone compatibility

The Flow 2 Pro and Osmo Mobile 8 weigh almost the same (about 357 g vs about 370 g with accessories) and both fold small enough for a jacket pocket. Both are rated for phones up to 300 g and 10 mm thick, case included, which covers most phones in a slim case.

The Hohem M7 is heavier at 629 g, but it takes phones up to 500 g and 12.5 mm thick, including some foldables, and has three 1/4"-20 ports for a mic or light. If you shoot on a big Pro Max with a lens attachment, that payload is the reason to choose it.

Does the Osmo Mobile 8P matter if you're in the US?

You'll see "osmo mobile 8 vs 8p" all over search results, so here's the short answer: the Osmo Mobile 8P isn't officially sold in the US.

DJI launched the 8P globally on 7 May 2026, with a detachable FrameTap remote and ActiveTrack 8.0. The US was left out (Lets Make Pixels, 7 May 2026). CineD reported that DJI's own line is that its application for US authorization "remains pending".

Some 8P listings do show up on amazon.com, but they're likely third-party imports. We don't recommend grey-market imports as a top pick: warranty, returns and support can differ from US models. In the US, the Osmo Mobile 8 or Flow 2 Pro is the safer buy today, and we'll update this guide if the 8P launches here.

Tip: check who the seller is on amazon.com. On 22 Oct 2026 the Flow 2 Pro was sold by Insta360's own store, while the Osmo Mobile 8, Hohem M7 and RS 4 Mini Combo were sold by third-party sellers.

Best gimbal for iPhone in 2026

On a recent iPhone, both main picks are excellent because both support Apple DockKit: pair over NFC and your iPhone tracks you in the native Camera app, FaceTime and other compatible apps.

  • Pick the Flow 2 Pro for group tracking, Active Zoom Tracking and creative extras: ProRes and Dolby Vision recording in the Insta360 app, a teleprompter, and a selfie mirror so you can frame selfies with the sharper rear camera.
  • Pick the Osmo Mobile 8 if you use a DJI Mic, want the tracker and light included, or mostly film yourself, your kids or your dog. Lightning iPhones need DJI's separate USB-C to Lightning cable for charging and audio.

For camera shooters: DJI RS 4 Mini Combo

Phone gimbals can't hold a mirrorless camera. For that, the DJI RS 4 Mini Combo was the best-selling camera gimbal in Amazon's Professional Video Accessories chart when we checked on 19 Oct.

Per DJI's specs, it carries 0.4–2 kg (most compact mirrorless bodies with a small lens), has auto axis locks, runs up to 13 hours stationary, and supports native vertical shooting for Reels. The Combo adds DJI's RS Intelligent Tracking Module (0.5–10 m, gesture control) and a briefcase handle for low-angle shots. Check your camera and lens weight before you buy.
